  Just inside Port Phillip Heads on the Point Lonsdale side there is a large flat area of small reefs with a lot of crayfish lurking in the area. This site is prone to strong currents and swell and can only be dived during slack water turning to a flood. Because of this should be exercised on this dive but the scenery makes it well worthwhile.

  Scuttled in the 1920s, this submarine was rediscovered by divers in 1982. The Melbourne Bottom Scratcher's Dive Club has placed a plaque at the conning tower base commemorating their find.

  Known as the 26m, 27m and 90 foot sub, the wreck lies with its bow pointing out to sea. During its scuttling
  the bow section broke off, exposing the forward torpedoes tubes and bow modifications.

  Depths of up to 30m can be gained around and under the broken bow section.
  As with the other Subs, the 26m sub is host to a variety of plant and animal life.

  Good conditions for photography are often found near the conning tower, which is usually surrounded by many fish.

  For the experienced diver, with the proper certificationn, penetration of the wreck is possible via several large openings in the hull. Such penetration should not be taken lightly, as being shallower than the other subs, this wreck is particularly susceptible to surge. Unwary divers can be literally sucked in and catapulted through the wrecks interior.
  However, the surge prevents any silting, and under suitable conditions this makes for one of Melbourne top dives.

  Boarfish reef boasts all the colours of the rainbow. The reef, which lies approximately halfway between Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale starts in approx. 10m of water and drops off to 22m in a system of caves drop-offs and overhangs. The reef provides a multitude of colour, plant and animal life. There are the spectacular Blue Devil fish, crayfish and of course Boarfish.

  Near the southern end of the reef, lies a large 4m Admiralty anchor encrusted with marine growth. On the northern tip of the reef a large sponge garden extends for approx 400m

  Portsea Hole is a popular dive site inside Port Phillip about 500 m (1,640 ft) to the North-East from Portsea Pier in a sunken remnant secion of the drowned valley of the Yarra River. The surrounding seabed marks the top of Portsea Hole at 12 m (39 ft) and to the North there is a vertical wall approximately 75 m (246 ft) long which drops to sand at 27 m (89 ft), then into a sand bowl which bottoms at 33 m (108 ft).

  Pope's Eye is a semicircular, horse-shoe shaped ring of large basalt blocks on top creating an artificial reef. This provides a safe anchorage for pleasure craft as well as an immensely beautiful locale for snorkellers and scuba divers. The bluestone foundations measure approximately 204 m (669 ft) in length, 22.4 m (73 ft) wide at the bottom to 1.25 m (4.1 ft) wide at the top, and rising to a height of 2.75 m (9.02 ft) above sea level at low tide.

  Just outside port Phillip Heads On the Point Lonsdale Side is an area of scattered reef with depths ranging from 12 to 18 meters. The sea life in this is area is prolific with crayfish, Blue Devils, Weedy Sea Dragons, Seals, Abalone and much more.

  The Soft calcium that comprises most of the terrain in this area has
  eroded into lots of little swim through's, valleys and overhangs all topped off with alight scattering of kelp.

  This is a fantastic site for the avid fish spotter.

  Party Point is an amazing section of the Lonsdale wall characterized by an almost verticle drop extending from a large point. There are sizable overhangs cascading down the wall which are easy to swim under and provide a home to the stunning variety of vibrant marine life found here. These include Blue Devils, colourful soft corals, sponges and other invertebrate life. The site is within the marine park so no fishing is permitted. Depth at the site ranges from 12m to 40m and provides a stunning dive for all levels of qualification.

  HMAS Canberra:  The ex HMAS Canberra dive site lies in approximately 28 metres (92 feet) of water, with the top of the mast about 5 metres (16 feet) below the surface at low tide. 

  Divers are able to access the superstructure of all decks. Highlights are the junior mess mural, the captain's cabin, the bridge, galley, mess decks and operations room. These areas have been left as intact as possible to create additional interest for divers, plus nooks and crannies for creatures. Please note that this can make the dive more challenging.

  It is recommended that all divers first do an orientation dive on the ex HMAS Canberra Wreck/Reef to become familiar with the complexities of the Wreck before venturing into any compartments, regardless of their level of skill or experience.

  J4 Sub:  The stern of the J4 Submarine almost merges into the surrounding reef.  During its scuttling the bow section broke off, exposing the forward torpedoes tubes and bow modifications. This makes the torpedo tubes easily accessible to scuba divers without penetration. The conning tower is intact and in excellent condition.

  Located inside the bay on the top North East section of the wall system, this large bommie rises from 40m to 22m with lots of other smaller scattered around it. Because it is located in the shipping channel this rarely dived site is teaming with marine life and a fantastic area for taking photographs. The bommie is covered in soft corals sponges and fans, with some overhanging ledges and small caves. It is outside the Marine Park and crayfish are known to be caught in the area. Other common fish species include the Southern Blue Devil, Magpie Morwong, Boarfish, schools of Pike and many others.

  Pope's Eye is a man made basalt rock annulus. It is the foundation of what was to be an Island Fort built in the 1880's. This horseshoe shaped artificial reef is now a Marine Reserve and the home of many species of fish, invertebrates and algae, including large fronds of macro cysts kelp. The inside of Pope's Eye provides a safe anchorage in 2 meters of water while outside, the rock wall extends to a depth of 12 metes. While the best time to dive Pope's Eye is on the start of the ebb tide, it provides almost all weather, all current diving. You'll be sur to spot some Australian Fur Seals here too!!

  Castle Rock is located outside the Port Phillip Heads. This beautiful bommie rises out of the sandy bottom from around 20m to around 12m at the top. The location makes for a great dive for everyone as there is heaps of ledges and splits and the bommie makes is easy to navigate, lack currents and have a fixed depth on the bottom.

  The rock is around 200m in circumference, has many overhangs, walls and swimthroughs, and can be circled several times in a dive. 

  It is a wonderful fish dive, with a wide variety of creatures from sea dragons to Port Jackson sharks to be found on and around the Rock. There is even a slim chance of a cray or two under the overhangs at the bottom.

  The Coogee was a steel screw steamer built in the UK and launched in 1887 as the Lancanshire Witch. Her length overall was 225 ft her beam 30 ft and her draught 14 ft giving her a displacement of 762 tons.

  She was owned by the Huddart parker company and was originally used on the Melbourne to Geelong run carrying cargo but was later converted to a passenger vessel and employed on the Melbourne to Launceston run. She also traded around the Australian coast for many years and was involved in quite a few incidents; the most famous was her collision with the Barque Fortunato Figari on Christmas day 1903 of Cape Shank.

  The steel bowsprit of the barque swept the deck of the steamer killing the Captain and the lookout. In the confusion and thinking the steamer was about to sink the Coogee’s officers and crew climbed aboard the barque. A steward and a passenger took command and after some semblance of order was restored a line was made fast to the barque who took the steamer in tow. It was soon found, however, the Coogee could still get up steam and she eventually made it to Melbourne under her own power.

  Other incidents included, 1889 collision with vessel Excelsior in Port Phillip bay, 1889 Collision with vessel Griper in Yarra River, 1891 collision with pilot vessel in Yarra river, 1914 collision with steamer Bombala in Yarra River.

  In 1918 she was employed as a minesweeper in the Bass Strait.

  She was eventually dismantled and scuttled off Port Phillip Heads in 1928. The vessel now lies north south in 34m of water with her bow facing north, the top of the wreck is about 26m with the bow and stern sections quite intact but the midsection with the exception of the boilers is quite broken up.

  Local fisherman tales suggest a solid brass sock lies within the pages of a journal hidden beneath the waves. So the story goes, a diver who retrieves the sock will furthermore bequest the title of a “free elf”. Thorough exploration of the picturesque reef structures and close study of the beauty in the sponge-life and corals may lead the curious diver in the right direction. Others, may need to simply marvel at the Boarfish, Blue Devils and Port Jackson Sharks often seen hiding beneath the sites many ledges and overhangs.

  This is a fantastic dive site for an avid fish photographer. This also near the area where Harold Hold disappeared so who knows what might be found here.

  The Hanging Gardens dive site can be found on the southern side of Nepean Wall near The Rip, just outside The Heads of Port Phillip on the Point Nepean side. The site features ledges forming a wall starting around 20 metres and going down to 60 metres. The reef ledges are covered in kelp that hangs over them, hence the name Hanging Gardens.

  A special treat just at the Northern end of the Lonsdale reef. No one really knows where the name originated, but everyone who has dived it knows it is a wonderful dive.

  With overhangs, aisles and ledges there is heaps of places for marine life to hide and for you to explore. The sandy bottom sourrounding the bommie gives you a max depth of 28m and the top lies in around 16-20m making it easy for all levels to have an enjoyable dive.

  At the base of the Bommie of around 27 meters with the sea bed covered in strange round rocks the size of cannonballs. You can follow the wall around to either the southeast or the southwest. Crayfish are abundant in the south east. Great dive lots of fish and lots of lovely soft corals and sponges.

  The Fawkner shipwreck, which les in the Victorian Ships' Graveyard, was a sister vessel to the Batman. She was used as a self-propelled hopper barge, a gunship, a torpedeo boat tender, and a minesweep.

  The Fawkner's propeller is visible and you can still do penetration dives on some areas of the wreck. The bow of this colourful shipwreck has plenty of marine life to be seen. The boiler is situated just a few feet from the stern and the "strongback" is clearly visible as you track over the hopper towards the bow.

  A bit more about the site........

  The Port Phillip Heads ‘Rip’ area located between Point Lonsdale and Point Nepean is a hotspot to target yellowtail kingfish, a prized recreational sportfish. As such, condensed boat traffic presents a level of compromised safety to ships and recreational vessels particularly when recreational vessels typically fish within the only shipping channel used to access ports within Port Phillip.

  The Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) has deployed a total of 16 artificial reef modules within four clusters at a depth of around 28 metres. Reef modules are durable, multi-dimensional, made from environmentally friendly cement and have a large surface area for colonisation of marine plants and animals. The artificial reef modules are a proven and stable design to attract yellowtail kingfish and improve marine life.

  To increase fishing opportunities for recreational anglers and to provide an alternative safer location away from dangerous shipping channels, the VFA has deployed the artificial reef structures approximately 800 m north-north east of Observatory Point within Port Phillip, 2.3 km east-north east of Point Nepean and 3.8 km north west of Portsea.

  The VFA worked closely with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) to seek all relevant approvals and assessments for the kingfish reef. Marine and Coastal Act consent to deploy the reefs was granted by DELWP. DELWP also conducted its own independent risk assessment.

  The location of the kingfish reef was selected in consultation with DELWP and the Harbour Master of Port Phillip Bay. The Port of Melbourne and Victorian Ports Corporation were also consulted and are supportive of the location selected.

  The Grotto is a reef dive located on the top of Lonsdale wall system that can only be accessed by boat. It gets its name from the many small caves and overhangs that make up the structure. With average depth of 12m the site gradually increases to a maximum depth of 24m. 

  This dive site is teeming with marine life: nudibranchs, boar fish, blue devil fish, cray fish, curious leather jackets and on occasion Port Jackson sharks snoozing in groups under rock ledges making this site a photographers paradise!

  HMAS Canberra:  The ex HMAS Canberra dive site lies in approximately 28 metres (92 feet) of water, with the top of the mast about 5 metres (16 feet) below the surface at low tide. 

  Divers are able to access the superstructure of all decks. Highlights are the junior mess mural, the captain's cabin, the bridge, galley, mess decks and operations room. These areas have been left as intact as possible to create additional interest for divers, plus nooks and crannies for creatures. Please note that this can make the dive more challenging.

  It is recommended that all divers first do an orientation dive on the ex HMAS Canberra Wreck/Reef to become familiar with the complexities of the Wreck before venturing into any compartments, regardless of their level of skill or experience.

  J4 Sub:  The stern of the J4 Submarine almost merges into the surrounding reef.  During its scuttling the bow section broke off, exposing the forward torpedoes tubes and bow modifications. This makes the torpedo tubes easily accessible to scuba divers without penetration. The conning tower is intact and in excellent condition.

  Discovered and named by one of the great local diving identities this dive site is spectacular.

  Approximately 1 kilometre from the Point Lonsdale Light and clear of the shipping channel, just outside Port Phillip Heads is an amazing area of Bommies or underwater rock formations. The strong current flow in this area has created a nutrient rich environment and subsequently prolific marine growth and the associated marine life. But it is the amazing rock formations that make this dive site special. This site has a couple of amazing swim throughs that are very safe easy to enter.

  Paradise Wall is located on the Lonsdale side of Port Phillip Heads and is a great dive site on Lonsdale Wall. It's the shallowest part of the wall with the drop-off starting in 10 or 12 metres of water. This makes the site a great beginning site for the less advanced diver as there are numerous overhangs to explore at relatively shallow depths. Each overhang supports a plethora of marine life for the diver to observe.

  While Paradise Wall starts with a couple of steps at shallow depths, it then drops away steeply into the depths. It's a magnificent spot with some fantastic caves down deeper. This has to be one of the best spots on the wall. An absolutely top-notch dive on territory no deeper than 30 metres. The fish life is always very good with large numbers of Southern Blue Devil about.

  Located on the Lonsdale side of Port Phillip Heads, the Lonsdale Wall extends for 1km, therefore providing many different dives. The Wall is characterized by an almost vertical drop. As you descend there is a slight step-out every 6-9m and behind each step-out there is a huge overhang, which is easy to swim through. These overhangs support an enormous variety of fish including the spectacular Blue Devils, soft corals, sponges and other invertebrate life.

  eroded into lots of little swim through's, valleys and overhangs all topped off with alight scattering of kelp.

  This is a fantastic site for the avid fish spotter.

  A great double dive!!

  Portsea Hole is a popular dive site inside Port Phillip about 500 m (1,640 ft) to the North-East from Portsea Pier in a sunken remnant secion of the drowned valley of the Yarra River. The surrounding seabed marks the top of Portsea Hole at 12 m (39 ft) and to the North there is a vertical wall approximately 75 m (246 ft) long which drops to sand at 27 m (89 ft), then into a sand bowl which bottoms at 33 m (108 ft).

  Then its off to the scallop grounds for a drift dive - spider crabs and crustaceans galore (we hope!) Whether you're catching a feed or just along for the ride - a drift dive is a great adventure to round out the days diving!

  Party Point is an amazing section of the Lonsdale wall characterized by an almost verticle drop extending from a large point. There are sizable overhangs cascading down the wall which are easy to swim under and provide a home to the stunning variety of vibrant marine life found here. These include Blue Devils, colourful soft corals, sponges and other invertebrate life. The site is within the marine park so no fishing is permitted. Depth at the site ranges from 12m to 40m and provides a stunning dive for all levels of qualification.

  Located inside the bay on the top North East section of the wall system, this large bommie rises from 40m to 22m with lots of other smaller scattered around it. Because it is located in the shipping channel this rarely dived site is teaming with marine life and a fantastic area for taking photographs. The bommie is covered in soft corals sponges and fans, with some overhanging ledges and small caves. It is outside the Marine Park and crayfish are known to be caught in the area. Other common fish species include the Southern Blue Devil, Magpie Morwong, Boarfish, schools of Pike and many others.

  Coogee:  The Coogee shipwreck lies approximately 4 km (2.49 mi) offshore between Point Lonsdale and Barwon Heads with its bow pointed towards shore (facing north) on a flat limestone and sand seabed. The bow rests on the sand at 33 m (108 ft) and the stern is at 35 m (115 ft) depth. The bow and stern are the most complete structures of the wreck as most of the midships section is flattened or missing — most likely due to the use of explosives to scuttle the ship.

  J4 Sub:  

  The J4 Submarine (aka Shallow, 26 metre, 27 metre and 90 Foot Broken sub) is part of our very own piece of WWI maritime history, plus an exciting and awe-inspiring playground for divers and freedivers.

  The wreck of the J4 Submarine is located in the Victorian Ships' Graveyard, Bass Strait. It lies on its keel running North-South with its bow pointing out to sea on a rocky seabed.

  Zoo Reef is a dive site made popular by our own Geoff Rodda when he used to work as a dive charter boat captain. It's located near Boarfish Reef and The Grotto. The area is now most noted for being in the Sponge Gardens, with all the relevant draw cards for photographers, fish spotters and Crayfish hunters. The currents can run fast and strong, providing fresh nutrients for the marine life and because of this the area should be dived at slack water.

  The Drop-off is located on the western end of Spectacular Reef, and consists of a series of walls that plunge to over 60 meters in 5-10m increments. This makes it a great dive for all levels.

  Huge boulders the size of houses are scattered over the area, lying where the ancient Yarra River deposited them. Midwater, large fish can often be spotted as they make their way into the Bay and if you are lucky seals and dolphins are also occasional visitors.

  During the period 1913 to 1999 a total of 46 obsolete vessels have been systematically and purposely disposed of in the Victorian Ships' Graveyard. These vessels range in size from 50 tons to 3347 tons and include sailing ships, steam ships, dumb hopper barges, steam hopper barges, J-Class submarines, dredges, tugboats, a Paddle Steamer, and an RAN Attack Class Patrol Boat. Originally thought to be located in a single area, the Graveyard actually covers a 20-kilometre stretch of the Victorian coastline between Torquay and Port Phillip Heads with vessels dumped between 10 and 20 kilometers offshore.

  The Milora was a Steel screw steamer built in Williamstown Dockyard, Victoria, in 1921 as the Emita for the Commonwealth Government Line of Melbourne. Her overall length was 331ft, her beam was 47.9ft and her draught was 27.1ft giving her a displacement weight of 1919 tons.

  On September 21 1934, under the command of Captain E. Wrigley she was inward bound from Newcastle with coal when she ran ashore inside Port Phillip Heads near Queenscliff. She was refloated after most of her cargo had been unloaded and towards Williamstown. The tugs Tooronga, James Patterson and Eagle assisted. She was eventually sold for scrap and after dismantling was towed out to Bass Strait by the tug James Paterson and scuttled in the ships graveyard, off Port Philip heads, 8 March 1935.

  She now lies facing North/South (bow South) with a maximum depth of 40+ meters.

  Castle Rock is located outside the Port Phillip Heads. This beautiful bommie rises out of the sandy bottom from around 20m to around 12m at the top. The location makes for a great dive for everyone as there is heaps of ledges and splits and the bommie makes is easy to navigate, lack currents and have a fixed depth on the bottom.

  The rock is around 200m in circumference, has many overhangs, walls and swimthroughs, and can be circled several times in a dive. 

  It is a wonderful fish dive, with a wide variety of creatures from sea dragons to Port Jackson sharks to be found on and around the Rock. There is even a slim chance of a cray or two under the overhangs at the bottom.

  One of the all time favorite wall dives. The steps goes from around 12m to 30m with amazing marinelife as the site is within a Marine Park. If you are certified to go deeper the site slopes down to 55m+

  Zoo Reef is a dive site made popular by our own Geoff Rodda when he used to work as a dive charter boat captain. It's located near Boarfish Reef and The Grotto. The area is now most noted for being in the Sponge Gardens, with all the relevant draw cards for photographers, fish spotters and Crayfish hunters. The currents can run fast and strong, providing fresh nutrients for the marine life and because of this the area should be dived at slack water.

  A bit more about the site........

  The Port Phillip Heads ‘Rip’ area located between Point Lonsdale and Point Nepean is a hotspot to target yellowtail kingfish, a prized recreational sportfish. As such, condensed boat traffic presents a level of compromised safety to ships and recreational vessels particularly when recreational vessels typically fish within the only shipping channel used to access ports within Port Phillip.

  The Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) has deployed a total of 16 artificial reef modules within four clusters at a depth of around 28 metres. Reef modules are durable, multi-dimensional, made from environmentally friendly cement and have a large surface area for colonisation of marine plants and animals. The artificial reef modules are a proven and stable design to attract yellowtail kingfish and improve marine life.

  To increase fishing opportunities for recreational anglers and to provide an alternative safer location away from dangerous shipping channels, the VFA has deployed the artificial reef structures approximately 800 m north-north east of Observatory Point within Port Phillip, 2.3 km east-north east of Point Nepean and 3.8 km north west of Portsea.

  The VFA worked closely with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) to seek all relevant approvals and assessments for the kingfish reef. Marine and Coastal Act consent to deploy the reefs was granted by DELWP. DELWP also conducted its own independent risk assessment.

  The location of the kingfish reef was selected in consultation with DELWP and the Harbour Master of Port Phillip Bay. The Port of Melbourne and Victorian Ports Corporation were also consulted and are supportive of the location selected.

  Paradise Wall is located on the Lonsdale side of Port Phillip Heads and is a great dive site on Lonsdale Wall. It's the shallowest part of the wall with the drop-off starting in 10 or 12 metres of water. This makes the site a great beginning site for the less advanced diver as there are numerous overhangs to explore at relatively shallow depths. Each overhang supports a plethora of marine life for the diver to observe.

  While Paradise Wall starts with a couple of steps at shallow depths, it then drops away steeply into the depths. It's a magnificent spot with some fantastic caves down deeper. This has to be one of the best spots on the wall. An absolutely top-notch dive on territory no deeper than 30 metres. The fish life is always very good with large numbers of Southern Blue Devil about.

  HMAS Canberra:  The ex HMAS Canberra dive site lies in approximately 28 metres (92 feet) of water, with the top of the mast about 5 metres (16 feet) below the surface at low tide. 

  Divers are able to access the superstructure of all decks. Highlights are the junior mess mural, the captain's cabin, the bridge, galley, mess decks and operations room. These areas have been left as intact as possible to create additional interest for divers, plus nooks and crannies for creatures. Please note that this can make the dive more challenging.

  It is recommended that all divers first do an orientation dive on the ex HMAS Canberra Wreck/Reef to become familiar with the complexities of the Wreck before venturing into any compartments, regardless of their level of skill or experience.

  J4 Sub:  The stern of the J4 Submarine almost merges into the surrounding reef.  During its scuttling the bow section broke off, exposing the forward torpedoes tubes and bow modifications. This makes the torpedo tubes easily accessible to scuba divers without penetration. The conning tower is intact and in excellent condition.

  Boarfish reef boasts all the colours of the rainbow. The reef, which lies approximately halfway between Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale starts in approx. 10m of water and drops off to 22m in a system of caves drop-offs and overhangs. The reef provides a multitude of colour, plant and animal life. There are the spectacular Blue Devil fish, crayfish and of course Boarfish.

  Near the southern end of the reef, lies a large 4m Admiralty anchor encrusted with marine growth. On the northern tip of the reef a large sponge garden extends for approx 400m

  One of the few shipwrecks that are available for all levels of certified divers. As she sits just on the edge of the shipping channel this dive is only rarely diveable and you should consider yourself lucky if you get the opportunity to dive here!

  Built in Glasgow Scotland in 1874 for Samuel Ramsden of Melbourne and named after his wife she cost 10,000 pounds. She was a three masted iron barque, length 151 ft beam 27 ft and a gross tonnage of 415 tons.

  The vessel sunk in 1875 on her first voyage out of Melbourne when she struck Corsair rock on her way to Newcastle. The Eliza was abandoned without loss of life, but floated free overnight and slowly drifted back into the bay and sank where she now lies. Unfortunately she rests right on the edge of the shipping channel and posed a danger to vessels using the channel. For many years her masts remained above sea level and so she wasn’t a real danger until her masts finally collapsed in the 1960 and then she needed to be demolished with explosives.

  The vessel now lies upright in 14 metres to the top of the bow and around 20 metres at the stern, which is quite badly broken up however the donkey boiler is still visible. She sits on the seabed facing east west with her bow to the west.

  As this dive site is subject to shipping an alternative dive site may be selected if shipping is present.

  Discovered and named by one of the great local diving identities this dive site is spectacular.

  Approximately 1 kilometre from the Point Lonsdale Light and clear of the shipping channel, just outside Port Phillip Heads is an amazing area of Bommies or underwater rock formations. The strong current flow in this area has created a nutrient rich environment and subsequently prolific marine growth and the associated marine life. But it is the amazing rock formations that make this dive site special.

  The ex-HMAS Canberra, a former warship which served the Australian Navy between 1981 and 2005, is the first artificial reef in Victoria created specifically for diving. The vessel was scuttled off Barwon Heads in October 2009 and now lies in 30 metres of water.

  Experience the thrill of diving in a shipwreck at the ex-HMAS Canberra. The dive site offers divers the opportunity to explore a large portion of the former Australian Navy ship. Swim over flight decks and through the bridge, engine rooms, galley and the accommodation quarters.

  The HMAS Canberra was the second of four FFG-7 Class Guided Missile Frigates built for the Royal Australian Navy by Todd Pacific Shipyards Corporation Seattle, Washington, USA. The HMAS Canberra was commissioned on 21 March 1981 and de-commissioned on 12 November 2005.

  The vessel hull is constructed of steel and the superstructure is aluminium alloy. It has an overall length of 138.1 metres and a beam of 13.7 metres. In service, the height from keel to top of the mast was approximately 39 metres. Parts of the ship, including the gas turbine engines, rudder, missile launcher, a section of the mast and propeller were removed by the Navy, prior to it being prepared for use as a dive site.

  Portsea Hole is about 500m from the Portsea Pier and is a remnant of the old Yarra River. The top of the hole is 12m and to the north there is a vertical wall approximately 75m long which drops to sand at 27m, then into a sand bowl which bottoms at 33m. The wall comprises small overhangs which are home to a vast array of invertebrate life and fish, in particular the beautiful Blue Devil fish. On the top of the hole there are several rock Bommies which host hundreds of fish of many species. Portsea Hole is one of Victoria's premier dive sites.

  Coogee:  The Coogee shipwreck lies approximately 4 km (2.49 mi) offshore between Point Lonsdale and Barwon Heads with its bow pointed towards shore (facing north) on a flat limestone and sand seabed. The bow rests on the sand at 33 m (108 ft) and the stern is at 35 m (115 ft) depth. The bow and stern are the most complete structures of the wreck as most of the midships section is flattened or missing — most likely due to the use of explosives to scuttle the ship.

  J4 Sub:  

  The J4 Submarine (aka Shallow, 26 metre, 27 metre and 90 Foot Broken sub) is part of our very own piece of WWI maritime history, plus an exciting and awe-inspiring playground for divers and freedivers.

  The wreck of the J4 Submarine is located in the Victorian Ships' Graveyard, Bass Strait. It lies on its keel running North-South with its bow pointing out to sea on a rocky seabed.
